| Each team chose two students who have consistently shown the 3R's to make a piano pin out of seed beads and safety pins. During Enrichment, students enjoyed some classical music and a snack while making their pins. Many students were surprised that they were able to make it. |
We are taking the pledge of donating one minute of our morning announcements for sixty days to literacy. We will have trivia each day and raffles for students who submit the correct answers. The topics will be guess the young adult author, reading passages, Book Tweets, and more. If you read for just 15 minutes a day, you can read a million words in a year. Reading is one way to learn about anything. By reading a book, you can travel the world. Join us in showing the importance of literacy by reading with your child and/or reading yourself. Each team of students joined Mrs. Curt and Ms. Dumas in learning about the expectations of our students. During the assembly, the importance of learning and where it takes you was stressed. Students worked in groups to make lists of how to show the 3R's. Their group's notecards were posted on the 3 huge R's that are posted on the cafeteria's windows. Students learned of little ways to show kindness throughout the day and how to have the courage to stand up to bullying. An education is what can give you a better life then the one you are living now. We appreciate everyone coming to our schools to find out your child's homeroom assignment before the start of school.
Once the day began, all students and staff had a great start to the new year. We just know this will be the #bestyearever. Thank you to all students who did an excellent job exhibiting the 3R's (respect, responsibility, and readiness) by coming to school on time, following the school uniform policy, having supplies to start the year, being respectful to everyone in our school community and being ready to learn. Students did an amazing job at lunch with our new recycling program. They had to empty all liquids and recycle the milk cartons and juice cans. We were able to cut our trash in half in just one day! The Reading Department will be holding Reading Week from April 7-11. They will have a book drive, Mystery Readers, and a door decorating contest. Please have your child bring in any gently used books (including books for younger readers) that will be donated to WMS families on our Family Night, April 16th from 6 pm to 8 pm in the Hamlet building.
For three weeks, students collected change for Pennies for Patients. Pennies for Patients is a yearly fundraiser to help children with leukemia. We raised $2558.07 in a tremendous effort by all students. Well done!
For Thanksgiving, students brought in over 1000 non-perishables for Haven of Grace. Twelve Thanksgiving dinner baskets were donated to WMS families.
For Christmas, enough toys were collected for thirty families that were donated to Angels Among Us. This gave toys to 120 children. The WMS PTO adopted five students. The WMS Staff adopted eight students. A special thanks to our new community partner, RI Athletic Club, who adopted six students. Students will be able to purchase a ticket for one attempt to dunk the principal, vice principals, or teachers who have volunteered for 12 NECAP rewards tickets. For 5 raffle tickets, students can purchase a "no uniform" ticket to dress down for one day. Teams are holding penny socials where they are raffling off items from movie tickets to gift cards. Thank you to the PTO and staff members for your donations!
